Project Overview

Fish Over Chips is a family-run fish and chip shop based on Kents Bank Road in Grange-over-Sands. The business marked 25 years of trading in July 2025 and has built a strong local following for its welcoming atmosphere and wide-ranging menu.

In 2025, the shop was named Mail Best Chippy 2025. The award was launched by the Mail to recognise some of the best places to enjoy fish and chips across South Cumbria, further reinforcing the reputation the business has developed over many years.

By January 2026, both the front of house and kitchen floors were showing signs of wear. The owners wanted a complete flooring replacement that would stand up to daily use while supporting hygiene, safety, and appearance.

Scope of Works

The project covered a complete flooring upgrade across the customer and kitchen areas, with each space assessed separately to ensure the correct system was installed for its intended use. In the front of house, approximately 120m² of flake flooring was installed. This included full surface preparation, followed by the application of a resin base, decorative flake broadcast, and a protective topcoat. The finished floor provides a slip-resistant surface suited to high footfall while maintaining a clean and consistent appearance throughout the serving area.

Within the kitchen, around 60m² of 9mm polyurethane screed was laid. This involved preparing the existing substrate, applying a primer, and installing the screed to the required depth. The system was selected to cope with heat, moisture, impact, and frequent wash-downs associated with a working commercial kitchen.

Across both areas, all existing substrates were mechanically prepared to remove contaminants and create a sound base for the new systems. This preparation was critical to ensure proper adhesion, even thickness, and long-term performance of the finished floors. A 120m² flake flooring system was installed to the front of house and 60m² 9mm polyurethane screed was installed to the kitchen Full preparation of existing substrates also took place before installation.

Chosen Flooring Solution

A flake flooring system was installed in the customer area to provide a clean, slip-resistant surface that suits constant foot traffic. The finish supports regular cleaning and maintains a consistent appearance throughout service hours. For the kitchen, a 9mm polyurethane screed was selected. This system is well suited to food preparation areas, offering resistance to heat, moisture, and impact. The seamless finish supports hygiene standards and helps protect the underlying substrate from long-term damage.

Installation Process

The project began with thorough surface preparation to ensure proper adhesion and an even finish across all areas. Each system was installed to match the demands of the space, with careful detailing around edges and transitions to support long service life.

Outcome

Fish Over Chips now benefits from a full flooring upgrade across both public and back-of-house areas. The new flooring supports the operational demands of a busy, award-winning fish and chip shop while presenting a smart and practical finish for customers and staff. This project reflects MCG Epoxy Coatings’ experience in delivering resin flooring solutions for food service environments, matched to the specific needs of each working area
